There are several conditions that can affect a cat’s urinary system and, unfortunately, these issues are fairly common among felines.
Clinical signs of urinary disease are usually similar, regardless of what is causing them, and include:
- Straining to urinate, even crying out when urinating, due to pain
- Bloody urine
- Increased frequency of urination, usually passing small amounts at a time
- Urinating outside the litter box, or in unusual or inappropriate places
- Over grooming the belly or excessive licking the genital area
- Behavioral changes such as irritation or even aggression
It is very important to keep in mind that if your cat is unable to pass urine due to an obstruction (usually caused by urinary stones), this is a situation that needs immediate veterinary attention. Complete blockage of the normal urine flow can be life-threatening and needs to be addressed as soon as possible.
