Daily and weekly checks are not only important to keep your guinea pigs in good health, but a great way to bond with your pet and get them accustomed to being handled.
Here are our recommended checks.
Daily Checks for your Guinea Pigs
- Check their eyes and noses for any discharge or mucus
- Check their coats are glossy and in good condition and their skin is healthy
- Check they are moving around normally
- Check they are eating all parts of their diet
- Check they are pasing urine and droppings normally
- Check the skin around their bottoms for any sign of wet – which can cause fly strike (check this twice a day in summer)
Weekly Checks for your Guinea Pigs
- Check their coats for any signs of dandruff, fleas or foreign bodies
- Check inside their ears for any signs of discharge
- Check the length and alignment of their front teeth
- Check their weights and keep a note of any changes
- Give them a gentle groom
