Christmas is such a fabulous time – and we’re all looking forward to a long awaited celebration, after a long year. Some of your pets (and children) have never seen a Christmas, so here’s a quick reminder of things to avoid.
Food
- Grapes, raisins and currants – these can cause kidney damage in dogs, so watch out for foods that contain them, including Christmas pudding, Christmas cake and mince pies.
- Chocolate – another yummy treat that dogs especially love as much as the kids do, but can cause various serious problems; for cats too
- Macadamia nuts – yet another Christmas snack that’s often within reach …
- Cooked bones – turkey bones are no better for your dog than chicken, so make sure they are wrapped up and disposed of safely
- Alcohol – some pets are partial to a cheeky slurp, but it can lead to a severe reaction, much more serious than just a mild hangover
Plants
Some of our most colourful Christmas plants can cause upset stomachs if ingested
- Poinsetta
- Mistletoe berries
- Holly berries
- Ivy
- Pine needles can be very sharp and get stuck in pads.
Although not just a Christmas plant, do remember that lilies, one of our most beautiful and popular flowers all year round, are very toxic for cats and most animals are allergic to them. Even the vase water can cause severe kidney damage.
Toys and more
If you have small children around at Christmas, it’s especially important to look out for anything your pet might find equally appealing
- Many toys contain small and/or sharp components
- Batteries
- Glass baubles can easily shatter – especially if climbing the Christmas tree is on your kitten’s agenda
So, stay safe and have a fabulous Christmas with your pets and family.
