What is Calicivirus?
Calicivirus is a readily transmissible disease which can cause upper respiratory infections and oral disease in cats.
What are the Symptoms?
These are some of the most common symptoms –
- Sneezing and nasal congestion
- Fever
- Drooling
- Discharge from eyes and mouth
- Inflammation and ulcers on the tongue and mouth
- Chronic gingivitis
- Limping syndrome in young cats
How does it spread?
Calicivirus can be spread directly from an infected cat through airborne particles. The virus is hardy and can survive for up to a week on a contaminated surface.
People can spread the virus to their cats if they have been in contact with a contaminated surface. Even isolated indoor cats should be protected from the disease.
Do vaccinations protect against it?
Calicivirus can be generally prevented with the core feline vaccine, however this will not always prevent infection – but greatly reduces the severity of the disease if contracted.
Kittens require two injections between 8-12 weeks of age and a single annual booster thereafter to protect them into adulthood.
