A new ‘highly virulent’ strain of Rabbit Viral Haemorrhagic Disease 2 (RVHD2) is currently spreading in Europe, raising concern for UK rabbit owners. This new strain is highly contagious and can be fatal. While we do not have data showing any spread to the UK due to lack of testing to confirm the exact strains, it is highly likely we will start seeing cases in the near future. The Rabbit Welfare Association and Fund have updated their guidelines to strongly recommend that rabbits receive an additional vaccination to reduce the risk from this strain.
The current 3-in-1 vaccine available for rabbits protects them against Myxomatosis, RVHD1 and some strains of RVHD2, but is not proven to protect against this new highly virulent strain. Fortunately, a new vaccine has been made available which does give protection. This supplementary vaccine is to be given in addition to the main vaccine each year, with at least a two week gap between the two.
Due to the high demand for the additional vaccine, we, like many practices, have been unable to source any from our suppliers. We are hoping that the vaccine will be available later this year and will be compiling a waiting list of registered rabbit owners who wish to have the additional vaccine. Please email vets@heathfieldvets.co.uk or call 01435 864422 if you would like to be added to the waiting list, and we will contact you as soon as stocks are available.
In the meantime it is important to maintain good biosecurity measures to protect your rabbits, such as:
- Cleaning and disinfecting enclosures and accessories regularly
- Limiting insects accessing rabbit areas by using fine mesh
- Changing shoes and outerwear after spending time outdoors or around wild rabbit habitats
- Quarantining new rabbits for a minimum of 14 days before introducing them to others
Call us on 01435 864422 to add your rabbit to our vaccine waiting list.
