Hello I’m Ian

I was born and raised on a game and livestock farm in the Eastern Province of South Africa. After five and a half years of student life at the University of Pretoria Faculty of Veterinary Science in Onderstepoort, I qualified in 1989.

My next move was 15 months compulsory national service in the South African Defence Force. I spent 12 months of this working as a vet in a rural area, providing a service to the local farmers and pet owners.

With that obligation completed, I returned to my hometown to work in a mixed practice for 9 months before deciding to have a six-month working holiday in the UK. As the saying goes, the rest is history…

I joined Heathfield Vets in 1991 and became a partner in 1998.

I am married to Rose-Ann and am the proud father of 2 daughters, Natalie & Jaime.

We have 2 family cats, Tommy and Peter, and a Springer Spaniel called Nala. We also have a small flock of pet chickens, which produce fresh eggs for the larder.

In my spare time, I enjoy cross-country jogging and cycling. Many of you will remember when I rode for nine days from Land’s End to John O’Groats to fundraise for Chestnut Tree House, and although I haven’t embarked on any such rides recently, I can often be spotted out and about on my bike in East Sussex.

I enjoy the variety of work encountered at the practice, particularly surgery. Over the last couple of years, I have added laparoscopic (keyhole) spaying, and TPLO (a type of orthopaedic) surgery to my skillset.

Hello, I’m Philip.

I was born in South Africa and as part of my compulsory National Service, I spent two years in the Infantry Corps of the South African Defence Force, before enrolling as a student at the University of Pretoria in the Faculty of Veterinary Science in Onderstepoort.

I completed my studies in 1989 and joined a mixed rural practice in Harrismith, South Africa, where I worked for three years.

In 1992 I started my own practice in the Karoo, an agricultural region famous for its sheep. It was a mixed practice, although most of my work centred around sheep reproduction.

This enabled me to make contact with experts in the field, which allowed my wife, Katrien, and I to visit the UK for the first time in 1994. We enjoyed it so much, that we decided to move here on a temporary basis in 1997.

Well, the temporary move became permanent and after spending seven years in another East Sussex practice, I joined Heathfield Vets as a partner in 2004 after catching up with Ian Killian, my old classmate from back in South Africa.

I enjoy all aspects of work in a small animal practice, with a particular interest in laparoscopic surgery and orthopaedic surgery.

My wife of 30 years and I have two cats, Violet and Saphi, both Oriental Shorthairs.

My spare time is usually filled with running and cycling.

There my work consisted mainly of dairy, beef, sheep herds and pet animals, with the odd bit of game work mixed in.

After four years I sold my practice to move to the Eastern Cape, to the town of Humansdorp. My main work was pet animals with a few dairy and beef herds to look after. Four years later my wife and I decided to move abroad, choosing the United Kingdom as our destination.

My first job in England was in Sevenoaks where I worked for 18 months. An opportunity of practice ownership opened up in Essex and here, together with my business partners, we ran our surgery for 12 years. This is where I did numerous personal development courses in pursuit of my main interests, which included canine and feline medicine, abdominal and cardiac ultrasound, soft tissue surgery and oncology (both advanced surgery and chemotherapy treatments).

I was one of the students to complete the first UK based course in Endoscopy and Endosurgery and have gone on to obtain a postgraduate General Practitioner Certificate in Endoscopy and Endosurgery. Although I hold this qualification, my focus has been primarily on ultrasonography over the last few years, allowing us to offer an extensive range of ultrasound services to our clients.

My wife Roulé and I have 2 daughters who both work in the veterinary industry.

Growing up my hobbies were all very dog related, as I did obedience and attack work training and some tracking trails with German Shepherds, Dobermanns and Border Collies. Over the years we have downsized our dogs to two long-haired chihuahuas, Peanut and Ellie.

I enjoy gardening and walking the dogs in my spare time.

The best part of my job is that every day is different and varied, I go from nursing hospital patients and monitoring anaesthetics to running nurse clinics or coaching students.  The role of every Registered Veterinary Nurse is far bigger than just cuddling pets (although that is the best part!).

My main areas of interest are surgery and anaesthesia, both challenging areas but very rewarding. I also enjoy running our mobility clinics for older pets.

I spend most of my free time horse riding, walking or running in the countryside.

I first met my husband Paul as a pen friend, during the Gulf War. We married in 1992 and have two grown-up boys. In my spare time I enjoy long dog walks with our two cocker spaniels, Flo and Paddy.

Hello, I’m Donné.

After many years as a veterinary receptionist in a busy, small animal veterinary practice in Essex, I joined the Heathfield Vets team as Practice Manager in 2016 after completing my Masters degree.

I always thought that would be the end of my studies, but given my love of learning and of the veterinary world, I undertook my Postgraduate Certificate in Veterinary Business Management, completing it in 2022. It’s exciting and rewarding to be able to use my skills to help our amazing team provide the care they do.

You will often find me darting around between reception, the hospital and my desk upstairs, mostly working behind the scenes to make sure everything is running smoothly and that the team has what it needs to provide the excellent level of client service and patient care we pride ourselves on.

My husband and I are counting down the days until we can get pets of our own, but in the mean time, when I get a spare minute (not every often, mind you!), you’ll find me in reception, saying hello to the pets that are coming in for consults – I love finding out how our clients came to own their pets and hearing about their little quirks at home.

Hello, I’m Sue.

I have been with Heathfield Vets since 2002 and have become a familiar face to a lot of our clients over the years.  I love that every day is different and varied, with the added bonus of a few puppy cuddles!

One of my roles is to process insurance forms for clients.  Pet insurance can be so complicated for owners and it’s always a nice feeling to be able to guide someone through the process and give them peace of mind that their claim is in good hands.

I first met my husband Paul as a pen friend, during the Gulf War. We married in 1992 and have two grown-up boys. In my spare time I enjoy long dog walks with our two cocker spaniels, Flo and Paddy.

I oversee our Platinum Pet Club at Heathfield Vets, which helps clients spread the cost of routine treatments.  It’s really rewarding to be able to advise owners about providing their pets with the best care possible.

I live in Hailsham with my two Chinchilla Persian cats, Jasper and Dexter, and my guinea pigs Mac and Deandra. In my spare time I like to grow fruit and vegetables in my allotment, and I also love to bake.

My main role is greeting clients on the front desk and dealing with queries, questions and bookings over the phone. The role of a veterinary receptionist requires a huge amount of knowledge, we can go from triaging patients over the phone and dealing with insurance claims to giving advice about parasite prevention or pet travel.  I really enjoy meeting our patients and their owners and following their journey from illness to recovery.

I have a beautiful cockapoo called Poppy; we enjoy long walks in the countryside together.

Donné Stam – Practice Manager

Hello, I’m Deb.

When I was 16, I asked to ‘see practice’ with Heathfield during my school holidays, little knowing that I was destined to become one of our longest serving staff members.

Starting with a part-time evening position in 1988, I soon transferred to become a full-time day receptionist.

After a further 6 years, I became the practice bookkeeper – achieving my qualification with the Institute of Bookkeepers.

I have a Springer Spaniel who is nearly 10 years old and still behaves like a mischievous teenager, although he does like more naps now! He has been nicknamed JCB (Joe Crazy Batkin!) by my two sons. I also enjoy walking in the countryside and am a keen lover of wildlife.
